Rich Review: Ghostbusters Stay Puft Cereal From Funko

funkostaypuftcerealbox5

In 2019 for Ghostbusters 35th Anniversary Funko made not 1, but 2 Ghostbusters branded cereals. The first, Ghostbusters Slimer Funko’s. (Ecto-Containment Blog Post, July 16, 2019) The second and probably final Funko’s Ghostbusters cereal was in association with The Stay-Puft Marshmallow Corporation. Well, if it really existed.

Rich Review: Ghostbusters Slimer Cereal From Funko

funkoslimercerealbox5

In 1985 Ralston brought us Ghostbusters cereal. (Ecto-Containment Blog Post, October 8, 2014) In 1990 after the Ghostbusters franchise went into a type of slumber, (also personally know to me as “the dark times”) our beloved cereal had disappeared.

Ghostbusters and its fandom would grow, anniversaries would see new merchandise, including things we could eat (GBI Blog Post, February 21, 2016) and drink. (Ecto-Containment Blog Post, June 17, 2016) Sure, Twinkies are snack food. It isn’t breakfast. When would ghostheads be able to have not expired and inexpensive Ghostbusters cereal again?

Enter toy (and cereal maker?) company Funko. In 2018 the Pops! company whom had already made plenty of Ghostbusters figures, (Ecto-Containment Blog Post, December 28, 2014) began producing Funko’s. Cereals based on licensed properties which probably already had a Pop! figure or 22.

The one Funko’s cereal that was missing, Ghostbusters. During a sorta off Ghostbusters anniversary, ghostheads had to maybe eat strange waffles instead.

What a difference a year makes. In 2019 Ghostbusters turned thirty five and decided it had a lot to do for this year and next year. To start a new day off right, it’s time for Funko’s. Ghostbusters. Slimer. Cereal!

IDW Publishing & Funko Publishing Funko Universe Comics

funko

IDW Publishing and Funko took what was probably an awesome meeting where the outcome will see Funko Pop Movie/TV characters in one off comics. Naturally you couldn’t have a Funko comics universe without Ghostbusters Pop Movies figures. (Ecto-Containment Blog Post, August 16, 2014)

Before they skyrocketed straight into the cultural zeitgeist, Funko’s Pop! vinyl figures started out for sale in comic shops. This May, they’re going back to the beginning by teaming with comic publisher IDW for a month of special one-shot comics featuring Funko versions of IDW’s iconic pop culture properties like Ghostbusters and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Funko Universe Month at IDW will primarily consist of five one-shot comics: Ghostbusters, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The X-Files, Strawberry Shortcake, and Judge Dredd. But there will also be Funko variant covers available for that month’s issues of regular IDW titles like Back to the Future, Orphan Black: Deviations, Dirk Gently: The Salmon of Doubt, The Powerpuff Girls, Star Trek, and more.

Funko Releasing Exclusive Ghostbusters Pops

funko

Yesterday Funko did some Periscoping video thingie. Where they were showing off some of their new and presumably upcoming products. Details are on the lite side. A new Pop! Movies Ghostbusters exclusive is coming to the blue retailer, Walmart.

Jorge Rodiguez tweeted a screencap of the Ghostbusters three pack:

It seemed to only take a couple more years. Funko finally made a Dana, (naturally as The Gatekeeper) Louis Tully, (naturally as The Key Master) and as an expected companion Zuul. Yes, technically Zuul and The Gatekeeper (at least in human form) are the same. Maybe its marketing as focus groups thought Zuul was a stronger sell.

Fortunately or unfortunately depending on how you feel about exclusives, for the foreseeable future this Funko Ghostbusters 3 pack is a Walmart exclusive. Hopefully for a set amount of time.

If Funko Were To Make The Real Ghostbusters Pops!

poplogoword

I haven’t really wondered what The Real Ghostbusters figures could look like if Funko were to make them. I’ve been more concerned with trying to complete the actual Ghostbusters Movie Pops! (iRich) figures.

I did think by now we would have heard Funko could be releasing Janine, (Ghostbusters) Dana, (probably as Gatekeeper) and Louis. Again, probably as his Keymaster version.

While I’ve slowly been collecting Ghostbusters Movie Pops and thinking of more Ghostbusters Pops, ghosthead Austin Brooks was busy designing would be The Real Ghostbusters Pops!.Read More »
