Working Ghostbusters Boots

Note: Originally appeared at my personal site, iRich.

Even though I ordered my Ghostbusters flight suit last October and already had the patches I didn’t have the right boots. Actually I never had near screen accurate boots for my Ghostbusters costumes, er uniforms. As an aside the comedic actors basically wore military grade garb because of Dan Aykroyd’s military/”tech” interests. Also their’s the idea that the Ghostbusters can feel like “ghost janitors.”

Bustin doesn’t always make me feel good.

Whether the boots were easily available or not to a major Hollywood studio and or famous people in 1983 the main actors at least wore Corcoran® or Carolina® zippered combat jump boots. The exact model has probably been discontinued. You can still buy a similar Corcoran boots between $150-$200 USD. By human nature and evolution I’m not a boot guy. In a civilized environment I would never spend that much on boots. I never spend anywhere near that even on sneakers made on the other side of the world.

Since I took, not always intentionally my sweet time in researching the right boots for me, I came across other boot brands, one named after a town I grew up in, the other which bares resemblance to a fictional motel. Those boot brands can cost less then Corcorans. During my searches I came across Working Person. At times the boots I might have ordered were discontinued, thanks to the site and internet cookies I learned of another new, similar model. With work continuing on transforming my Tru-Spec flight suit into a Ghostbusters uniform the time was now (well then) to order boots.

I also noticed since Presidents Day the price of boots have been on sale. A pair of Bates 2184 Side Zip Paratrooper boots were on sale for $106.20 USD. Saving about $12 which includes free shipping. As I needed the boots in a week for a trial run, I paid for three day shipping.

I’m The One To Call

Note: Originally appeared at my personal site, iRich.

On March 1, 2014 after almost 5 months I was finally going to take my Tru-Spec flight suit and Ghostbusters patches to a professional tailor for sewing. Their hadn’t been a rush, of course now that I had a event coming up in a week, time was of the essence. Friend and colleague Bill had similar thoughts and wanted to come up to expedite our “business” needs for the upcoming Monster-Mania Con and other Ghostbusters NJ happenings.

I hadn’t had any personal experience with any tailors locally since I moved in 2009. I knew one local place and hopefully that would be good enough. The place we went to is near my sub division and probably does more business with seniors then nerds who want to see their childhood realized more in adulthood.

We explained the placement of the patches and the “patch” woman pinned them and even told us how she’ll strengthen them so the “no ghost” logo won’t bend. At the time their was a pending snow storm (Titan) which would probably close the shop on Monday. Our first con since 2006 was about a week away. The latest it might be ready is sometime on Saturday.

Maybe it would have never been that much, when they told us $12 USD, part of me wished I had brought the flight suit in last year. After being busy on day 4 and getting back around lunch, the tailors/dry cleaners called to let me know my jacket (for some reason they called the flight suit on Saturday a jacket. On a basic level we even called them coveralls) was ready.

I couldn’t wait to see it, without the boots which I didn’t have yet, I thought I’d have to wait until Thursday to wear them together. My only minor nitpick which I can’t see when I’m wearing the flight suit is how a little of the “strength” stitching is through the “no ghost” logo. Its possible the shop didn’t have the sewing capabilities to sew around instead of through the logo shape. Or an older woman with years of seamstress experience felt it was better to sew it that way. Which also would have been more then fine if she had changed color threads and used white. Its so minor in the end it doesn’t matter.

More Ecto-Containment

If you were on Facebook (become my friend) yesterday evening/last night or Twitter (become a follower) you were witness to the cluster fudge that was a necessary attempt to transfer ectocontainment dot com fully into Word Press. Automatic rising hosting costs from 1&1 and changes in my web hosting needs necessitated integrating Ectocontainment by the first week of February.

I had been wanting to get to it before the weekend, life around snow storms named after Greek gods put some things on hold. I suppose I could have done this tomorrow, late in Saturday afternoon seemed just perfect. 😀 I was under the impression that WP did all the hard, technical work. If I had taken 30 more seconds to read my part I would have known before posting to social media that I had to press some buttons and manually update “techy stuff” through 1&1. Most of went it smooth until 1&1 servers weren’t playing nice with Word Press. While I knew the transfer might take up to a few hours, it hadn’t worked (I don’t know if it was because its a weekend) and my 1&1 admin panel read in a red text that their was an error with the transfer.

During part of this time the site was down and I tried some workarounds. The WordPress version of the site was never accessible through ectocontainment dot com. Once I fixed something, the site could be accessed from ectocontainment.wordpress.com. Last night I cancelled the original transfer (at least through WordPress) and decided to go to “plan B,” a new domain name with WordPress.

I thought about bringing back an old Ghostbusters site name of mine mostly for the URL. It would have meant “re-branding” and it isn’t necessary. The solution has been there this entire time, Ecto-Containment. In the universe of Ghostbusters, just about anything ecto is followed by a hyphen.

Now instead of just a redirect, the entire site is part of ecto-containment.com. Eventually I’ll purchase a space upgrade. It isn’t necessary early in 2014.

Also because of the botched transfer, I can no longer receive email at my former spengs @ ectocontainment dot com email address. If its necessary to email me, which should be just about 0.01% of the time, my Ecto-Containment email address is: spengs@ecto-containment.com.

Social media links remain the same and information has been updated to reflect the new domain name and email address.

30th Anniversary: Ghostbusters Movie Media

gbmediaevowide

Over on my collecting blog/site, iRich I’ve written (moved to Ecto-Containment) a “30th Anniversary” post about my Ghostbusters media (format) collection. Originally I didn’t know if writing about old media could be that interesting. It brought back a lot of memories others can certainly relate to, even if its not about Ghostbusters. It also took me about three days to prepare and write.

Throughout Ghostbusters 30th Anniversary (which could be any day during 2014) if I write a collecting post that’s more Ghostbusters related then The Real Ghostbusters related, it can be found at Rich Collectibles. I’ll try not to wait almost two weeks to talk about it on Ecto-Containment.

If you’re interested in my other aspects of Ghostbusters collecting (and talking about Ghostbusters) I’ve written about how I became an ghosthead, the franchise I’m apart of, the Ghostbusters costume/uniform I’m putting together, and from 2013 and now 2014 toys/toy prop reviews which have been extensively written about and documented through Ecto-Containment.

Guess To The Future

guesslabel.jpg

In Back To The Future II before Doc went back to 1985 to disrupt Marty’s Saturday with Jennifer, Doc had gone ahead to October 22, 2015 (and presumably beyond) to see what would be the fate of Marty and Jennifer’s (“Bring her along, this concerns her too.” – Doc) future kids.

Two years before that 2015 it’s safe to say Marty wasn’t sitting on his computer taking pictures slightly mimicking his 17 year old look. Which is what I’ve been doing this morning. I was really looking forward to yesterday because of the Guess jacket. Unfortunately something I ate or drank at lunch hurt my stomach. When the jacket didn’t quite fit, (“Size adjusting…”) I knew that was part of the reason. I still wanted to wear the shirts, jacket, vest, and mirrored sun glasses.

I also wanted to write at least a little about the jacket. I figured I’d be feeling better by today. I could try the jacket on today and get better self taking photos (thanks iMac web cam!) to write and share on iRichard Roy today. Besides feeling better the jacket fit slightly better. It’s still a slim fit and unless I move somewhat into the Guess universe I won’t always button it.

Ghoststoppers

spengswinstonpromowall.jpg

Note: Originally posted at my personal blog, iRich.

If you’re not familiar the Ghostbusters movie that became a worldwide phenomenon could have been called Ghoststoppers. Ghostbusters, not to be confused with The Ghost Busters is a ’70s TV show. As Ghostbusters was being shot in 1983, Columbia, today Sony Pictures hadn’t secured the rights for the title. While filming the “end of the world is upon us” sequence with the Ghostbusters and a lot of extras shouting “Ghostbusters!,” then Associate Producer Joe Medjuck called Columbia to (my words) give them that extra push to secure the film rights. After Ghostbusters became a juggernaut, The Ghost Busters cashed in. When Columbia was ready for a Ghostbusters cartoon series, they stuck it to Filmation by calling it The Real Ghostbusters. It took 11 first season episodes, Citizen Ghost is the back story that explains why the animated Ghostbusters are more realer then two guys and a gorilla.

Unlike the cleverness that is Back To The Near (Future), (iRich) I don’t want to call all my blog posts about my Ghostbusters flight suit, “Who Ya Gonna Call?” When I was sitting here with the cursor blinking “it just popped in there” and Ghoststoppers is it.

Last time I talked about Ghostbusters, I wrote about the “franchise” or group I’m apart of, Ghostbusters New Jersey. For putting together the new site, Bill was building me a Belt Gizmo and was helping me with my existing Ghostbusters prop replicas. I still didn’t know when I would order a new flight suit. I really wanted to, come October the demand can exceed supply. Other then ghostheads and certain professionals who actually need a flight suit that isn’t 100% military spec, who are all these people? The sites I knew about were out of stock or back ordered. Between known research and a thorough search, I found bdu.com. They had a Tru-Spec khaki flight suit in my size in stock! I would only have to wait until October 14.

While I was waiting Bill and I met up on Sunday to talk GBNJ biz, complete my new Belt Gizmo, do some upgrades to my 13 year old Proton Pack, make my Mattel/Matty Collector Ecto-Goggles more comfortable to wear, and take the stitches out from my good patches. The next day, at the end of the day UPS delivered my flight suit.

Back To The Near

As unbelievable as this seems to me in adulthood I somehow missed the entire phenomenon of Back To The Future in July 1985. When I was older I also missed out on seeing both sequels in theaters. At least I was part of the marketing experience. Pizza Hut “2015” neon sunglasses anybody? I’m not sure why, I even missed out on the 25th anniversary screenings. :/ Like with Ghostbusters today, Back To The Future is one of those classic ’80s movies that theaters do show periodically.

I was around 8 when I saw BTTF for the first time. I don’t remember if it had been on TV yet. I do remember ‘ol golden arches selling the movie on VHS for $5! That was a bargain considering I’m old enough to remember within a few years of that retailers were selling VHS movies for $100. I know I saw that at least once. Was the market unregulated?

Regardless of how I first saw Back To The Future I liked it immediately. Sure I didn’t understand everything about it or the deeper nuances of time travel. I liked (and appropriately disliked) the characters, Hill Valley, (which I wanted to visit) and of course the DeLorean, a car because it has stainless steel panels works well enough with the Flux Capacitor to allow people and a dog to travel through time.

Second to Ghostbusters I watched Back To The Future whenever I had a chance. If it was on TV, our own copy, and of course when a certain bird network aired it with a special when Back To The Future II was in theaters.

Back To The Future II

By the time (really no pun intended) Back To The Future II was out on VHS (and maybe laserdisc) I was into science fiction movies a little more. Some of which involved time travel. I always loved the idea of what the future would bring. I still remember in elementary school reading a Weekly Reader that talked about living on the moon in the year 2000. It was 1986.

I was excited to unexpectedly see Back To The Future II at a family friends house around 1990. Who wouldn’t want to visit Hill Valley in 2015? If Hill Valley were real, it wouldn’t be a big deal to see it now as we’re well into 2013. Hill Valley itself doesn’t technically exist. The Universal back lot, Whittier, City of Industry, Pasadena, CA for example are real places where the trilogy was filmed.

Are You Serious About This Catching Ghosts?

richardroybackinblack2
Original Photo: October 2004

Note: Originally posted at my personal blog, iRich.

It was going to come up within 5 minutes, best to start talking about it now. To say I’m a big fan of Ghostbusters would be an understatement. Obsessed usually describes it. I loved the movie since I was 6 and saw it during its first theatrical run. Their was always a wonderment about people who would want to and could actually catch ghosts. The equipment, of course I didn’t know about props then. It may as well been all real to me.

It’s why I knew I wanted to be like them. Toy company Kenner (and my parents) would bring me all that clever and fun The Real Ghostbusters toys. My parents were even cool enough to buy me a kids (the official ones may not have been out) flight suit for my uniform. That all worked well until I was about 12.

Ghostbusters and I have been through great times and bad times. It was never far from me. When the time was right (Halloween 1997) I decided with my best Ghostbusters friend to buy a couple of adult flight suits and make some attempt at the props. Even with Netscape Navigator it was still 1997. We had tools, not so much talent.

Things became rushed, it was just enough that most people knew who to call. Oh yes I said it. Problem was, the flight suits weren’t really the right color. Forget screen accuracy. The props were made from storage containers. I was still a ghosthead, (a fan of Ghostbusters) who also had a “franchise” site. It was in part because of that in 2000 I finally bought a military khaki flight suit, pistol belt, patches, boots, and an actual prop Proton Pack replica!

Granted the patches, Proton Pack, and other props weren’t 100% accurate. Not that I’m that guy who has to have 100% screen accuracy. It was a lot better then the working in an industrial job coveralls, one step from a Tupperware party.

About 4 years later I decided to get a new flight suit. This time in black to have more of a Ghostbusters II style to it. I also bought new quality patches. Other props had marginally been upgraded too. GBNJ co-founder Bill Malkin and I met Ernie Hudson (Winston Zeddemore himself) at a couple of Chiller Theaters wearing our new flight suits.

During the mid to late 2000s I didn’t have a real need to wear either flight suit and wear the gear. After some life changing events, including a move I went through tough times with Ghostbusters again. It would take at least a couple of years, the time began to feel right to want to “suit up” again.

Which is really why I wanted to write about this now.

Ectocontainment Recognition: Kenner Collector

kcbanner11

One of the goals of scanning and uploading the Kenner instructions I own was to share them not only with ghostheads, but with Kenner/collector fans too. As I wrote about on July 6, 2012 (Can You Tell Me How To Get To Kenner St.?) Dan Flarida and John Wooten run the largest (and maybe only) comprehensive site about Kenner and for Kenner collecting. One of the features of Kenner Collector are Kenner’s instructions for their various toy lines. Missing from the line up are The Real Ghostbusters instructions. Being that I mostly could, I wanted to help fill in that section.

I wrote both Dan and John about the instructions. As they aren’t PDFs they could use them how they like or let other Kenner fans know about what i’ve been doing here and what I’m still looking for. Coincidentally a year to the day that I shared and wrote about Kenner Collector Dan wrote a blog entry (Ectocontainment.com Looking For Kenner Instructions) about the site, myself, and the instructions.

It’s appreciated. As I told them when I have new related Kenner The Real Ghostbusters content I’d be happy to share that with them and the Kenner community as well.

Ectocontaining In Mexico

gbmxectoc

Rolando Muñoz aka Ghostbusters213 in the ghosthead community recently let me know via Twitter @ectocontainment that he has been enjoying reading the NOW c o m i c s on his iPad. What I thought was a tweet and a RT from me turned into support from Rolando.

Rolando also runs Ghostbusters Mexico, a Ghostbusters news and community site. He wanted to and is linking back to Ectocontainment. That would have been appreciated enough, he wrote a blog entry about me, more about the NOW comics, and is promoting the comic pages.

In addition to being pretty much the only ghosthead in Mexico I kinda know, Rolando is a talented artist who has drawn Ghostbusters fan art. He didn’t ask me to say anything about it, as an artist too who never quite mastered how to draw people I wanted to bring attention to his work.

Check his site out and if you don’t read Spanish (because you stopped after 10th grade) most browsers can translate for you.

Feel free to follow Rolando aka Ghostbusters213 on Twitter @Ghostbusters213

Where’s The Ectocontainment?

2013 edit: Removed blog picture by choice, not request.

Two months since my last update I’m finally getting around to letting Ghostbusters, The Real Ghostbusters, and Ectocontainment fans know I’ve been ok and let everyone know what had been going on. I know something else more important is happening in our country, which made me write today. The timing couldn’t have been worse since late October, early November.

Around the last update which was suppose to be the “warm up” to a series of updates that might have taken us to Halloween I decided it would be a good time to take advantage of warm Fall weather by going outdoors and go for a walk. I’m a typical evolved human. I don’t usually spend my time in nature, enjoying the scenery, let alone feeling good and exercising out in it. I wasn’t even half way into this walk when I began sneezing. I’m also not one to get sick often (I have had enough health inconveniences) and have sinus flare ups. Within 2 days something had aggravated my sinuses a lot. It didn’t take long me to feel it full on. Which continued to the weekend the Northeast began experiencing heavy winds. For those who didn’t know part of my town is part of the New Jersey shore and I live about 15 miles from shore towns such as Ortley Beach, Lavallette, and yeah Seaside Heights.

With not feeling well I was a little confused as to whether the hurricane had actually come through or not. It wasn’t, we had a separate storm system going on. The hurricane was powerful enough that the winds could be felt 100+ miles from it’s position to areas such as where I live. When the actual hurricane made landfall in Jersey it coincided with how I was feeling. I was almost over it and fortunately my immediate family and I were safe in our house. Except for intermittent power disruptions, we were ok.

I know Hurricane Sandy caused devastation. Even with what I’m going to say I’m not complaining. I want to tell part of my story to help me. Our house only sustained minor damage and our vehicle started right up. It was early on and we didn’t know completely about what had happened in Atlantic City, our own town, the barrier islands, and what was about to happen in NYC and beyond. It was in the aftermath when our problems began. My neighborhood utilities are underground which probably helped during the hurricane. Two days in when selfishly “everything” should have been ok our power went out as I was having lunch. My neighbors and my family thought our entire street was out. When the power hadn’t come back on by dinner and we went out to see where we could eat we knew immediately the entire subdivision was without power. At least the houses. Some local businesses were using generators or were on other “grids.” What played with our minds was knowing and seeing other subdivisions near by had power.

You want to be hopeful that what’s supposed to be “normal” will return that way. Which included use of cell phones. We had thought maybe overnight it would all be restored. It wasn’t and to add what a lot of people were going through a cold front came in. We had somewhere we could have gone to, kept thinking with the timeline the power company gave (originally by November 6) that their was always a chance that as each day came and went the power would be restored. It became clear that wasn’t going to happen. Days were spent in public places like the library, shopping centers, and a mall with lights, heat, and at meal times, food. We’d be in and out of the house until it was a little necessary to stay home. Multiple bedtimes were spent in prayer that when we would wake up we’d have lights and heat. If it had lasted longer as we pushed into another week we were going to leave.

As we were really feeling it and I was preparing a shoddy candle one night over a weekend, the power came on in two short bursts. It was like a tease, by 8:30 it came on. What was a kind of quick normalcy there were still intermittent problems. Some that wouldn’t occur until December.

Thanksgiving was almost an after thought and small plans were thrown together very close to the day where there was a lot to be Thankful for. Even with this, it caused problems between a family member and myself. The holiday passed, that relationship was as normal as could be, and personally life began again to get back to…well normal. Things I had/have to do, appointments I had/need to make had I not been sick or lived through Hurricane Sandy are still on going.

I haven’t given up on Ectocontainment, surviving gave me pause with a lot to think about. I would like to see updates resume. I don’t know when yet. Either a “life update” or site update can be posted here or through Ectocontainment’s social media sites.

I hope this finds you all as well as you can be. May you and your loved ones be safe and have a Merry Christmas and a good start to the new year.
