Back In The Saddle Part 1

Back In The Saddle Pt. 1

Episode 37

You’ll Need A Reference: The episode title, Back In The Saddle has origins from a popular 1940s cowboy song, “Back In The Saddle Again.” To be back in the saddle, someone or something is operational once again.

A saddle is a seat for a person to sit on more commonly for when they’re riding a horse. Similar, a saddle could be used for a bicycle, farm equipment.

Quotes:

  • “I’m so glad you let me take you out for your birthday Egon.” – Janine
  • “Well yes, I certainly appreciate the sentiment Janine. I really don’t see why it’s necessary to celebrate a ritual that has its origin in pagan initiation rights.” – Egon
  • “Then their’s the issue of non precise nomenclature. Birthdays aren’t actually birthdays since obviously…” – Egon

Location: Ghostbusters Firehouse Exterior (Night)

Quote: “In fact it wasn’t until the ancient Aztecs that the person’s chronology achieved certain eminence…” Egon

You’ll Need A Reference:

The Aztec people were certain ethnic groups of central Mexico, particularly those groups who spoke the Nahuatl language and who dominated large parts of Mesoamerica from the 14th to 16th centuries. The Nahuatl words aztecatl (singular) and aztecan (plural) mean “people from Azlan”, a mythological place for the Nahuatl-speaking culture of the time, and later adopted as the word to define the Mexica people. Often the term “Aztec” refers exclusively to the Mexica people of Tenochtitlan (now the location of Mexico City), situated on an island in Lake Texcoco, who referred to themselves as Mēxihcah Tenochcah or Cōlhuah Mexihcah.

Quotes:

  • [Hearing His Name]
  • “Oh Egon, what is that?” – Janine
  • “Perhaps there’s been a leak in the Containment Unit and poltergeists have escaped.” – Egon

You’ll Need A Reference: During The Real Ghostbusters series The Real Ghostbusters caught a lot of poltergeists (while freeing Slimer) in season 1 episode Slimer, Come Home.

They also dealt with poltergeists in season 2 episode Cry Uncle. In season 5 episode Slimer’s Curse Janine receives calls about gremlins and poltergeists.

Quotes: “Surprise!” – Ray, Peter, Winston

Quotes:

  • “Peter, Ray, Winston! Oh, I don’t believe it.” – Egon
  • “We’re here, we’re back, we’re bad, so let’s par-tay!” – Peter
  • “Man, you look like you’ve seen a ghost.” – Winston
  • “Egon was never big on surprises.” – Ray

backinthesad4.jpg

You’ll Need A Reference: Similar to when The Real Ghostbusters were celebrating Winston’s birthday in The Real Ghostbusters season 1 episode Slimer, Come Homelimer, Come Home Slimer ate a good portion of Egon’s birthday cake. This time he didn’t completely devour it.

Quote: “You never change you nasty green slime machine you. Bad goblin.” – Peter

It Just Popped In There: I’m sure Peter knows this and is using goblin as an interchangeable word with ghost; Slimer is a ghost, Class V on the spectral classification scale.

backinthesad5

Quotes:

  • “Check it out, it’s really them!” – Garrett
  • “The original Ghostbusters.” – Kylie
  • “The Real Ghostbusters.” – Roland
  • “They look real alright. Real old.” – Eduardo

It Just Popped In There: Where did the Extreme Ghostbusters come from? They’re wearing their Proton Packs and Kylie has a Ghost Trap. Did they come from a call with ECTO-1 parked in the Firehouse?

backinthesad6

Quotes:

  • “So how did that Hollywood thing work out Peter? Ever sell that idea for another movie about us?” – Egon
  • “We’re very close to a deal, but I’m holding out until Brad Pit becomes available.” – Peter

It Just Popped In There/You’ll Need A Reference: So that’s why Ghostbusters 3 hadn’t been made by the end of the 1997. :p It’s somewhat presumable that Ghostbusters II was eventually made around season 5 Partners In Slime. Although not seen as an “in joke” like season 1 Take Two where The Real Ghostbusters existed, then a movie, GHOSTBUSTERS was filmed.

Actor Brad Pit who seems to be involved in a few movies per year couldn’t have played “Peter Venkman” in 1997 as he was busy with The Devil’s Own and Seven Years in Tibet.

backinthesad6.jpgQuotes:

  • “And what have you been up to Ray?” – Egon
  • “Well I was doing pyro kinesis research at a major university in Idaho. There was a minor mishap, followed by a major explosion.” – Ray

It Just Popped In There: Surprisingly or not Egon doesn’t seem phased by what Ray just told them. Maybe in part from all the times they did experiments which most likely brought the Firehouse down in market value.

Quotes:

  • “Now I’m working with Perpetual motors.” – Ray
  • “Wow, you mean you actually built an engine that puts out more energy than takes to run it?” – Roland
  • “Eh, no. I’m sales manager for Perpetual Motors, the used car lot. I can get you a deal.” – Ray

It Just Popped In There: I can believe that even if Egon and Peter didn’t talk much, the subject of a new movie wouldn’t come up often. I find it hard to believe that Egon and Ray wouldn’t have kept in touch pre or post Idaho pyro kinesis explosion.

I understand from Darkness At Noon Pt. 1 that The Real Ghostbusters closed there business because apparently there weren’t any more ghosts in the city. Depending on what Ray was doing by the time Egon and the new team know about Achira, why wouldn’t Ray drop everything and return to New York? Where he could resume studying the paranormal and mentor the extreme Ghostbusters.

backinthesad7.jpg

Quotes:

  • “What have you been up to Winston?” – Janine
  • “I’ve been doing a bit of traveling now that I have my pilots license.” – Winston

It Just Popped In There: During The Real Ghostbusters all 4 of them would fly in ECTO-2. I don’t remember if all four of The Real Ghostbusters piloted ECTO-2 throughout the show 7 seasons. If they did, they would had a pilots license. Right? Overthinking it, it’s possible that Winston didn’t keep up with it. Or he needed a different pilots license.

Quotes:

  • “Ghostbusters. You got the dough, spook’s gotta go.” – Peter
  • “Suit up boys, we’re back in the saddle!” – Peter
  • “Out of the question Peter. There’s a new team now.” – Egon
  • “C’mon big guy. One more run, for old times sake.” – Peter
  • [while “torturing” Egon] “You kids don’t mind, do you? It’s his birthday. C’mon, let the old guy live a little.” – Peter
  • “Ow Peter. I’m getting a dermal abrasion.” – Egon

Location: Ghostbusters Firehouse Interior. Room: Storage

backinthesad9.jpg

Sorry, I Missed It: Peter’s uniform is missing its ghost in the “no ghost” logo.

It Just Popped In There: I get that the uniforms were put away after The Real Ghostbusters closed there business. Why not leave them in there lockers? Maybe they once were, with the extreme team, they’ve been using the lockers?

It Just Popped In There: It’s sad that the aging (Real) Ghostbusters don’t fit into their original uniforms anymore. Sometimes like in real life. Its still cool seeing them suit up and being happy to be ‘Ghostbusters’ again.

Sorry, I Missed It: What happened to Ray’s original khaki uniform. And Egon’s light blue uniform? Is that along with Egon’s a more Ghostbusters II style uniform?

In the happy scene (third screen cap) it appears Ray changed uniforms and borrowed one of Egon’s.

Location: NYC Bowling Alley (Night)

backinthesad13

Sorry, I Missed It: With the scale of ECTO-1 as The Real/Extreme Ghostbusters arrive at the bowling alley, the “no ghosts” logos aren’t very detailed.

You’ll Need A Reference: The Real Ghostbusters zapped and trapped quite a few ghosts at ‘Bowl Rama’ in season 2 Knock, Knock.

backinthesad14

It Just Popped In There: At least bowling ghost isn’t throwing bowling balls at the bowlers. Why throw pins at all? Ghost counseling is something the Real/Extreme Ghostbusters should consider.

backinthesad15

Quotes:

  • “Excuse me lard butt, but I don’t believe that’s regulation footwear.” – Peter
  • “Always uncooperative.” – Ray
  • “I guess we gotta blast ’em.” – Winston
  • “And a one and a two and a bobbly bobby boo….!” [firing extreme proton streams]

Quotes:

  • “We came, we saw, we bowled!” – Peter
  • “And that boys and girls is the way you trap a ghost.” – Ray
  • “I want to see this ecto creep go into the Ecto-Containment Unit.” – Winston
  • “I’ve made a few nifty modifications to that as well.” – Egon

Tobin’s Spirit Guide: “A Class III semi-corporeal with all the trimmings.” – Ray

Quotes:

  • “Reminiscent of that time we busted that Class IV shapeshifter in the Poconos.” – Egon
  • “The one I’ll never forget is that nasty Egyptian water spirit we bagged in the East River.” – Ray
  • “She was kinda cute as I recall.” – Peter
  • “Peter, she dragged you 50 feet under the water.” – Egon
  • “Cute, but moody.” – Peter

You’ll Need A Reference: The Class IV Egon is referring to was the Metamorph from season 2 Drool, The Dog Face Goblin.

The Egyptian water spirit would have been a case that happened off screen during The Real Ghostbusters.

  • “Guess they have a lot of catching up to do.” – Kylie
  • “That Venkman dude really got on my nerves.” – Eduardo
  • “Yeah. what an ego. [mocks Peter]” – Garrett

Quote:

[over radio] “We got a call, Hells kitchen area.” – Janine

Location: Hell’s Kitchen (Day)

backinthesadhellskit

You’ll Need A Reference:

Hell’s Kitchen, also known as Clinton (and formerly as Midtown West) is a neighborhood on the West Side of Midtown Manhattan in New York City. It is traditionally considered to be bordered by 34th Street to the south, 59th Street to the north, Eighth Avenue to the east, and the Hudson River to the west. The area provides transport, medical, and warehouse infrastructure support to Midtown’s business district.

Once a bastion of poor and working class Irish Americans, Hell’s Kitchen’s location in Midtown has changed its personality since the 1970s. The 1969 City Planning Commission’s Plan for New York City reported that development pressures related to its Midtown location were driving people of modest means from the area, and the gritty reputation that Hell’s Kitchen developed afterward kept real estate prices below those of most other areas of Manhattan. Since the early 1990s, the area has been gentrifying, and rents have risen rapidly. Located close to both Broadway theatres and the Actors Studio training school, Hell’s Kitchen has long been a home to learning and practicing actors.

It Just Popped In There:

How did the Extreme Ghostbusters exactly know where to find a ghost in Hell’s Kitchen? Yeah they were “on it,” seemed to cut Janine off before she could provide more information.

It Just Popped In There: The ghost resembles a rat who like a rat would eat out of a dumpster.

Quotes:

  • [over walkie] “Egon here, what do you got?
  • “Appears to be a Class IV.” – Roland
  • “And it’s a feeder.” – Garrett
  • “It takes one to know one.” – Eduardo

Quotes/It’s Technical:

  • [over walkie] “Preparing to engage.” – Kylie
  • “No, wait! If its a Class IV feeder you don’t want to blast it without emptying the ecto-tropic particle filter.” – Ray

Location: Hell’s Kitchen (Day)

Quotes:

  • “You want to reset the…” [interrupted by Class IV feeder] – Ray
  • “Just blast it!” – Garrett
  • [after trapping (maybe a little too quickly) Class IV feeder] “Don’t worry, we kids took care of it.” – Kylie

Quotes:

  • [PKE Meter Detection] “It…it can’t be.” – Kylie
  • “Hey man, if that thing is over there, whose in the trap?” – Eduardo
  • “We must be dealing with twins.” – Roland
  • “Uh, make that triplets.” – Garrett
  • “Uh, Egon. We got a situation here.” – Roland

It Just Popped In There: I realize a ghost isn’t going to wait while adjustments to equipment are being made. When Ray Stantz, an experienced Real Ghostbuster is taking you through the steps so you can bust said ghost you listen to the man.

Their personal feelings about the old team and reaction with the first Class IV feeder shows some lack of experience. If they couldn’t continue to handle a ghost they knew very little about, they should have left, made the necessary adjustments, and continued searching (if necessary) for this Class IV feeder.

Quotes/It’s Technical:

  • “Two Class IVs in the alleyway. We ran out of juice. I don’t know what happened” – Roland
  • “After you kicked in the Ecto-Tropic Particle filter did you to recalibrate the main circuit?” – Ray
  • “I should have remembered that.” – Roland
  • “It’s an easy mistake to make Roland.” – Egon
  • “Specially considering your relative level of inexperience.” – Ray

It Just Popped In There: Extreme Ghostbusters just got schooled.

Quote: “Why don’t you kids get a soda and we’ll show you how its done.” – Peter

It’s Technical: The Real Ghostbusters are using real Proton Packs and Ghost Traps.

itjustgotrealer

It Just Popped In There: I know it’s The Real Ghostbusters second (first with real equipment) bust together in years. Maybe the Proton throwers shouldn’t be thrown up in the air. Yeah, its them so all safety measures accounted for. Still seems like an unnecessary liability.

Quotes:

  • “Unbelievable.” – Kylie
  • “That’s one tough act to follow.” – Roland
  • “Those fossils are better than us.” – Garrett

backinthesadstreamline

  • “We still got it.” – Winston
  • “It is quite an adrenaline rush isn’t it?” – Egon
  • “Selling used cars doesn’t have this kind of kick.” – Ray
  • “What do you say fellas? Maybe we made a big mistake giving up ghostbusting. Sure the hours were lousy and the pay was non existent. What if we revamp the whole operation? Streamline, modernize. [Extreme Ghostbusters leave] I mean, if we did it up right.” – Peter
  • “That’s a pretty big IF Peter.” – Winston

It Just Popped In There: If the pay was non existent, (probably exaggerating or was that because Ghostbustin’ wasn’t profitable with probably a massive [Slimer] food budget, equipment upkeep, property maintenance because of experiments gone awry and ghosts who know where The Real Ghostbusters live and work) it had to play just as big of a part as to why The Real Ghostbusters closed there doors.

  • [walking away] “I’m out of here too. Pagan needs a bath.” – Kylie
  • “I’m sure if anything ectoplasmic comes up, The Real Ghostbusters can handle it.” – Garrett

It Just Popped In There: If the Extreme Ghostbusters were feeling left out and not needed, instead of taking off (what looks like for good) grow up and talk to The Real Ghostbusters about it.

Sure Peter got ahead of himself earlier. Haven’t the Extreme Ghostbusters ever seen GHOSTBUSTERS?

Location: NYC. Brooklyn Bridge (Day)

backinthesadbrooklynbridge

You’ll Need A Reference:

The Brooklyn Bridge is a hybrid cable-stayed/suspension bridge in New York City and is one of the oldest bridges of either type in the United States. Completed in 1883, it connects the boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn by spanning the East River. It has a main span of 1,595.5 feet and was the first steel-wire suspension bridge constructed. It was originally referred to as the New York and Brooklyn Bridge and as the East River Bridge, but it was later dubbed the Brooklyn Bridge, a name coming from an earlier January 25, 1867, letter to the editor of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle and formally so named by the city government in 1915. Since its opening, it has become an icon of New York City and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1964 and a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark in 1972.

Not For Sale: (If This was 1987) I feel if this was an episode of The Real Ghostbusters, Peter’s megaphone would have a “no ghost” logo on it.

It Just Popped In There: Earlier Extreme Ghostbusters feelings aside how great is it to finally see The Real Ghostbusters in ECTO-1?

Quotes:

  • “Hey, it looks like the identical cousin of those two ghosts we busted before.” – Winston
  • “Must be a big family, like the Osmonds.” – Peter

You’ll Need A Reference: The Osmond family is a large family in the music and entertainment family going back to at least the 1970s.

Quotes/It’s Technical:

  • [looking at P.K.E Meter] “Curious. It’s not only identical in appearance to those other two, it’s PKE density is exactly the same.” – Egon
  • “What are you thinking, some kind of ecto-clone?” – Ray

Quotes:

  • “We got to put a stop to this before we have an infestation on our hands.” – Ray
  • “I’m with you.” – Winston [preparing to fire at the Class IVs]
  • “No. Hold your fire. I think I know what’s happening here. Overtime we defeat this entity it comes back as a duplicate. Make it extinct, you only succeed in making it thrive.” – Egon
  • “If we can’t blast them, what are we suppose to do?” – Winston

backinthesadectocarparts

Quote: “I don’t know how long we can keep this up. Eventually we’re going to run out of car parts.” – Winston

It Just Popped In There: Even though it was most likely necessary, it still had to hurt to “dismantle” ECTO-1 to buy time while people were evacuated from the bridge.

Quotes:

  • “We really messed up this time.” – Roland
  • “Their’s no way you could have known.” – Ray
  • “You kids did what you had to. You probably saved our lives.” – Winston

It Just Popped In There: Understandably the Extreme Ghostbusters are feeling worse. They could have known if they had been around. Placing blame isn’t really going to solve anything. There will still be duplicate ghosts. Least we forget “rat ghosts” chewed up an historical landmark which will cost the city A LOT.

Tobin’s Spirit Guide/Quotes:

  • “Apparently we’re dealing with a Class IV self replicating specter. Extremely rare.” – Egon
  • “I noticed a highly ionized discharge off the ghost. They do feed off metals.” – Kylie
  • “Which do have very strong ionic properties. Yes, I see where you’re going with this.” – Egon

It’s Technical/Quotes:

  • “She’s saying the metallic ions ingested by these ghosts correlate directly to their self replicating abilities.” – Ray
  • “And because protons tend to displace ions every time we blast the entity with proton beams the self replicating ions are displaced into the atmosphere where the entity reforms and duplicates.”

You’ll Need A Reference: Yes, science! 😀

I guess Ray always has spare parts.

Quotes:

  • “Just as we expected, eight of them.” – Egon
  • “And eight is definitely enough.” – Kylie

You’ll Need A Reference:

Eight Is Enough is an American television comedy-drama series that ran on ABC from March 15, 1977, until August 29, 1981. The show was modeled on the life of syndicated newspaper columnist Thomas Braden, a real-life parent with eight children, who wrote a book by the same title.

Quotes/It’s Technical:

  • “Uh before we proceed it should be mentioned that any kind of ionic fusion carries with it a huge risk factor. If too much energy is released during the process..well this area we’re standing on could end up a crater the size of death valley.” – Ray

You’ll Need A Reference/Important Safety Tip: In Ghostbusters before Peter, Ray, and Egon captured Slimer together, Egon basically tells them if they use the equipment wrong, “total protonic reversal.”

You’ll Need A Reference:

Death Valley is a desert valley located in Eastern California. It is one of the hottest places in the world at the height of summertime along with deserts in Africa and in the Middle East.

Death Valley’s Badwater Basin is the point of the lowest elevation in North America, at 282 feet below sea level. This point is 84.6 miles east-southeast of Mount Whitney, the highest point in the contiguous United States with an elevation of 14,505 feet. Death Valley’s Furnace Creek holds the record for the highest reliably recorded air temperature in the world, 134 °F on July 10, 1913. This has been contested by other weather experts.

Located near the border of California and Nevada, in the Great Basin, east of the Sierra Nevada mountains, Death Valley constitutes much of Death Valley National Park and is the principal feature of the Mojave and Colorado Deserts Biosphere Reserve. It is located mostly in Inyo County, California. It runs from north to south between the Amargosa Range on the east and the Panamint Range on the west; the Sylvania Mountains and the Owlshead Mountains form its northern and southern boundaries, respectively. It has an area of about 3,000 sq mi. The highest point in Death Valley itself is Telescope Peak in the Panamint Range, which has an elevation of 11,043 feet.

Quotes:

  • “Ionic build up is reaching critical mass.” – Ray
  • “Yes, ionic fusion is taking place.” – Egon

Quotes/It’s Technical:

  • [checking P.K.E Meter] “This is odd. We defeated the entity, I’m still getting a massive reading, yet totally unlike anything I’ve ever seen.” – Egon
  • “That’s gotta be a malfunction. The spectral spread of that read is miles wide. No ghost existent is that big.” – Ray

It Just Popped In There: Sure, it could have happened that fast. With barely two minutes until the end of part 1, Egon walks away from a celebration, knows something isn’t right, then is checking an active P.K.E Meter.

You’ll (Kinda) Need A Reference: Oh Ray! I know its been years, couldn’t Mr. Stay-Puft cover at least a mile? Checking quick math, Mr. Stay-Puft from Ghostbusters is slightly taller then a 100 feet.

Converted to square miles, that big guy has the real estate of at least 4 sq. miles. Or of course Ray knew this, also knows that Stay-Puft isn’t really a ghost in a definitive sense. Which that being the case, he’s still right because Ray Stantz is a Real Ghostbuster.

Quote: “I wonder.” – Egon
